Great column! I really enjoyed it. It is hard for us nowadays to realize just how controversial Lincoln was as a wartime leader, and just how unpopular he was during much of the war. Like you said, Bush isn't Lincoln and Lincoln isn't Bush. And it is a matter of concern that the war on terror seems to have no quantifiable or definitive end. But to act like what's going on nowadays is somehow completely unprecedented (like the always readable but frequently hysterical Sullivan is doing) is to ignore the strong (and arguably illegal) executive-branch behavior that went on not only under Lincoln, but under Roosevelt.

I really enjoyed this column regarding the hypocrisy of liberals in general, and Sullivan in particular. What made this column even more appropriate is the approaching (former) holiday of Lincoln's Birthday on February 12th.

One minor correction, the draft enacted during the Civil War ended when the war ended. The next Selective Service Act was passed in 1917 for World War I, it also ended with the war. Our first peacetime draft occurred with the passage of the Selective Service Act of 1940. This ended in 1947 requiring the passage of a new act in 1948. While it underwent many revisions it was this "draft" which lasted until 1973.
